LADY HEAD VASES
Lady Head vases, originally designed for use by florists, are popular collectibles.Vases in the shape of beautiful and famous women, popular in the 1940s, '50s, '60s and '70s, are once again finding favor with collectors.

Lady Head Vases from 1940-1970
Beautiful women and flowers go together like June and brides, and florists were happy to accommodate with the sale of bouquets in specially made semi-porcelain vases in the shape of the head of a lovely woman. These vases were introduced in the 1940s and discontinued in the 1970s when the trend had not only run its course, but florists began to find them too small for most flower arrangements.

Matte or Glossy and Made in Japan
The ladies came in a gloss glaze or a matte finish semi-porcelain. Some are stamped with impressed or embossed marks on the bottom, but many came with paper labels that are no longer in place. Unlike many collectibles, the lack of a manufacturers mark does not much affect value. One reason for this is that the items are of recent enough vintage that they have been fairly well documented. A well informed collector can identify the make by looking at the piece. The vases came in a variety of sizes from four to seven inches, and as a general rule, the larger sizes are more valuable depending of course, on condition and rarity.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
Most collectors prefer fancy hats, more realistic features and even pearl necklaces and matching dangle earrings adorning their lady head vases. Some even have a shapely hand with painted nails delicately framing one side of the face

GLAMOUR GIRL HEADS
One of the vases transitioning from the '40s to the early '50s was the heavier ceramic Glamour Girl vase. Some of these were incised, or imprinted directly in the ceramic material, with the words “Glamour Girl.” Others are simply marked U.S.A.

These distinctive head vases received painted features in various colorings with some decorating jobs being much nicer than others. The demure pin-up girl characteristics and hairstyle on this particular design give it a definite retro '40s look, although some are attributed to the '50s when offered for sale. While Glamour Girls certainly attract their share of collecting attention, but they're actually low rung when it comes to desirability.

CHALKWARE

FIRE KING – THE BRAND
Fire King Glassware is the brand name of heat resistant glass made by Anchor-Hocking from 1942 to the late 1970s. Fire King is the brand name and it can be classified further by pattern and by color. The Fire King family of kitchenware includes Fire King Oven Wear and Fire King Restaurant Ware. There were also numerous Fire King promotional and advertising items made throughout the years. Currently Fire King Mugs are very popular collectibles

Fire King Glassware Colors
  • Jadite (which may also be spelled Jade-ite, Jad-ite or Jadeite) is the translucent green color. Jadite is the name of the color, not a pattern name and it is not exclusive to Fire King or even Anchor-Hocking. However, it is most closely associated with Fire King and is the most popular color.

  • White - Many Fire King patterns and pieces were made in white. This white glass is not referred to as "milkglass" and it is more translucent than milkglass. Many of the White Fire King pieces have decals or decorative edges.
  • Vitrock - Anchor-Hocking sometimes called their white color "Vitrock". This is more opaque and less shiny than the "regular white" and may also be a light beige or off-white. These pieces were also made with decals and decorative edges.
  • Azur-ite - is a very light blue. Actually it looks more like white with a blue tint.
  • Peach Lustre - is s very shiny peach color. (After 1966 Anchor Hocking called this color Lustre.)
  • Ivory - is a very light beige translucent color.
  • Gray - is a very soft gray, it looks more like a white with a gray tint.
  • Turquoise Blue - is a very pretty translucent medium to soft blue.
  • Lustre is the name used for the Peach Lustre color after 1966.

  • Pink - a soft translucent pink used in the Swirl oven ware pattern.
  • Rainbow - the Rainbow pattern was made in pastel and primary colors that included Pink, Tangerine, Blue, Green, Yellow
